Los Angeles and the
Size Acceptance Movement
Los Angeles has been at the center of size positive activism since the radical days of the Fat Underground. After all, in spite of the thin, whitewashed, hopelessly homogenized images Hollywood spews into our popular consciousness, Southern California is as beautifully diverse a place as they come. Los Angeles County houses 10 million beautiful, diverse persons; proportionately speaking (and, of course, Beverly Hills aside), that makes for a lot of fat folks jammed into one geographic area!
We have a glorious history of fat activism in Los Angeles, starting with the creation in the 1970s of the Fat Underground. For more information on this Radical Therapy and activist group, please visit here.
We of the Los Angeles Chapter of NAAFA hope to honor those activists who came before us by creating a space for size acceptance, education, and activism for Southern Californians of all sizes.
